AROUND 137 families composed of 624 individuals living in five barangays in Barili town were affected when heavy rains that occurred on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, and Friday, Aug. 5 caused the Dikeside River in the town to overflow and flood the villages.

Following the flooding in the southwest Cebu town, Barili Mayor Pablo John “John-John” Garcia IV ordered town officials to immediately provide relief to the affected households.

In a statement, Garcia said the heavy rains that occurred for two straight days have brought heavy flooding, affecting Barangays Bagakay, Dakit, Poblacion, Gunting and Campangga.

At least four houses situated in Dakit and Bagacay were “severely damaged,” Garcia said.

Most households in the affected barangays were flooded and damaged but not a single resident was reported injured or killed, according to Garcia.

Aside from affected households, the footbridge that connects Barangays Santa Ana and Poblacion collapsed. The damage to the bridge was pegged at P1 million.

Garcia said they immediately distributed relief goods, vitamins and medicines to the affected households.

The office of Garcia’s uncle, Rep. Pablo John “PJ” Garcia (Cebu, 3rd), will also distribute food packs to affected families.

The owners of the four severely damaged houses in Dakit and Bagakay will receive financial assistance from the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation fund of Representative Garcia. The fund was already downloaded to the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas.

Representative Garcia has been in close coordination with the Integrated Provincial Health Office for the distribution of additional medicines and vitamins.

Personnel of Barili’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office have been on standby as intense rain continues to threaten the town.
