THE Lapu-Lapu City Government gave out a total of P150,000 to barangay officials and police officials as a reward for their implementation of the city’s anti-illegal drugs campaign.
Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan gave P50,000 to officials of Barangays Caw-oy and P100,000 to the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO) at his office on Monday, August 8, 2022.
The cash prize to Barangay Caw-oy was after they were declared a “drug-cleared” barangay in the city while the cash prize to LLCPO was due to its successful buy-busts that led to the arrest of two high-value drug targets and the confiscation of P2 million worth of illegal drugs.
Caw-oy officials and LLCPO director PCol. Arnel Banzon formally received the cash reward during the city’s flag-raising ceremony.
In his Facebook page on Monday, August 8, Chan said the cash rewards to Caw-oy and LLCPO aimed to incentivize organizations that continue the campaign against illegal drugs.
Last April 4, the city government recognized Barangays Tingo, Baring and Tungasan for also being declared drug-free. The three barangays also received P50,000 each.
Drug rehab center
Meanwhile, Chan announced that they will soon have a rehabilitation center for drug suspects who surrendered or those who opted for plea bargaining to get out of jail.
This after City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC), in its 3rd Quarter meeting Monday, passed a resolution requesting the Lapu-Lapu City Council to pass an ordinance establishing “Balay Silangan.”
“An ordinance establishing the Balay Silangan in the City of Lapu-Lapu at the vicinity of Home Care Center compound located at Barangay Gun-ob and providing guidelines for the community involvement in reforming drug offenders into self-sufficient and law-abiding members of society,” read the CADAC resolution. Chan is the chairman of CADAC.
Some CADAC members led by the City of Lapu-Lapu Office of Substance Abuse Prevention executive director Garry Lao made an ocular inspection of the two-story building inside the Home Care compound in the morning before their 3rd Quarter meeting in Cordova.
The building merely needs a few improvements, efficient water connection, and some items like beds, tables and home furnishings.
The two-story building can accommodate around 30 individual drug surrenderers. (PR)
