Are you also one of those people who can’t keep up with children, employees, students or siblings' terms on the internet? Do not fret ‘cause here's an explanation of some of the ones we frequently see (and hear).

Language is constantly changing, but there’s one kind that so often evolves even faster than the rest: slang. Every generation has its own unique slang words. With the rise of the social media platform, TikTok in the past years, Gen Zers have created a new set of slang and vocabulary that can be confusing even for Millennials.

POV

POV is in short of “Point Of View”. A “Point Of View” style video refers to a trend in which the video shows the viewer’s point of view of a certain situation. Just like during sports matches (such as football, hockey, soccer, etc.), the POV camera shows the game from the perspective of a particular player. In Formula 1 motor racing, viewers can see the race from a driver's dashboard camera.

On Tiktok, it pertains to a clip/scene filmed so the viewer experiences events through the eyes a certain character.

CEO

In real life, CEO means “Chief Executive Officer.” On TikTok, to be called CEO of something means that you are best at it. For example, on a well-edited video, you will see comments like “CEO of editing” “CEO of transitioning” “CEO of viral videos” and so much more, you get the idea.

FYP

FVP is the abbreviation of “For You Page”. You probably have seen #FYP everywhere on TikTok. As the name suggests, the content creator uses hashtag #fyp or #foryoupage to make their videos show up on your homepage based on your personal algorithm, thereby getting more views.

OOMF

OOMF stands for “One of my friends” or “One of my followers”. It is often used negatively to talk about people behind their backs. For example, “OOMF stops spamming my social media.”

Shadowban

Being “shadowbanned” from a social media platform means that one's content is invisible to everyone. Since platforms don't even confirm if shadow-banning exists, we don't know why users experience it — And if it is happening, it's likely that there isn't just a single reason for it. One, however could be repeatedly going against the platform's community guidelines with content containing hate speech, nudity, drugs, fake news, violence, or any other inappropriate behavior the online community doesn't condone.

Cheugy

This word, used to describe “uncool” things that are either out of style or trying too hard to be in style. It's also used to describe people who unsuccessfully try to be trendy or objects that were a bit out of touch with current trends. It is the opposite of being trendy.

Go Little Rockstar

“Pope is a Rockstar” is a track by the American Indie band, SALES, that recently goes viral on TikTok. The song has a line “Pope is a Rockstar” but people commonly misheard it as “Go little rockstar”

“Go Little Rockstar” is one of the most wholesome trends on TikTok where people celebrate achievements of many kinds or even just memorialize lost loved ones.
