Last August 1, the Department of Education kicked off the 2022 Brigada Eskwela, its yearly activity in preparation for the school opening. What is significant in this year's Brigada Eskwela is the intensive efforts to ensure that schools are ready for the 100% resumption of face to face classes this November 2.

With the theme “Brigada Eskwela: Tugon sa Hamon sa Ligtas na Balik-Aral”, this annual DepEd activity which will run until August 26, highlights the country’s collective efforts from various partnership engagements, creating a safe learning environment for the learners, teaching and non-teaching personnel, and community to achieve safety while ensuring the delivery of quality education.

In the region, the Brigada Eskwela was launched on August 2 at the Bulwagang Kanlahi in Tarlac City. The said activity aims to promote the need for a strategic and healthy partnership among education stakeholders and partners for a safe return of schoolchildren to in-person classes on August 22, 2022. RD May Eclar assured that the department has been keen on initiating activities and programs that will ensure the safety of 2.6 million learners in Central Luzon. In her speech, she emphasized the role of bayanihan. She stated that this bayanihan spirit opens opportunities to engage and secure investments for education as well as collaboration to ensure preparedness of our teachers, our learners, our parents, for the start of the new school year with the common goal of providing access and quality relevant education to our learners in Region III.

The Brigada Eskwela, which has been introduced several years ago, the yearly school maintenance activity has also evolved. Brigada Eskwela 2022 will be a full-blown program focusing to deliver access to education and quality of education. Comprising the physical aspect of 2022 BE is Brigada Eskwela sa Paghahanda, which is a couple of weeks’ school maintenance and minor to medium repair for the re-opening of in-person classes.

For the education quality facet, BE complemented through Brigada Eskwela Plus seeks to increase learner participation and reduce dropouts, and improve education quality in participating schools to increase student performance. Furthermore, Brigada Pagbasa is an after school reading remediation program in response to Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs Initiatives).

Based on the implementing guidelines, the school maintenance and repair activities, such as but not limited to physical cleaning, painting/repainting, and doing minor repairs, shall be allowed this SY during the schools’ preparation period and may continue as deemed necessary. The conduct of Brigada Eskwela activities shall adhere with the most recent safety and health protocols issued by DepEd, particularly those stated under Item No. VI and other relevant provisions of DO 034, s. 2022. All applicable provisions of DO 034, s. 2022 relative to BE activities shall apply.

The Brigada Eskwela activities shall focus on addressing the challenges and learning resource gaps of learners for face-to-face classes, which shall be fully implemented in all public schools nationwide by November 2, 2022. This will ensure that quality basic education will continue despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 endemic phase.
