Endurance athletes test grit in Spartan PH

Cebu will once again play host to a renowned endurance sport as the Spartan Race Philippines takes the spotlight on Aug. 13, just six days after Ironman 70.3 Philippines.

The obstacle race will take place at the Citi de Mare properties on the South Road Properties, Cebu City. Organizers are expecting to draw about 1,500 participants in this major obstacle tilt.

Categories to be competed are Sprint, Super and Spartan Kids.

The Super category features a distance of 10 kilometers with over 25 obstacles to hurdle; the Sprint class has a 5K distance with 20 obstacles; Spartan Kids has an 800-meter distance with around six obstacles.

In a virtual press briefer, race director Micca de Joya said that this is going to be an exciting competition in Cebu.

Cebu City Councilor Dondon Hontiveros and Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) chairman John Pages welcomed the event and expressed excitement about hosting one of the world’s largest obstacle races and endurance brands.

“Cebu will always be a favorite sports venue because of our central location, our easy access to travelers, including the international participants; our many hotels, and the Cebuanos’ love for sports. But what sets Cebu apart is our festive nature, symbolized by the Sinulog. The Spartan race is the same, it’s a fun and festive sports event. Cebu City is honored to welcome the Spartan Race,” said Pages.

Also present in the virtual briefer were Spartan Race marketing manager Beef Co, Spartan Race general manager Marc Laureze Celis, Filinvest’s Tracey San Pablo and Spartan Race ambassador Brigitte Carmel Lim.

Prior to the big event, the organizers conducted community workouts in SM Seaside Cebu and Il Corso grounds last weekend, and the third and final community workout on Tuesday at the Cebu City Sports Center.

On Aug. 7, Cebu was the host of the Megaworld Cebu Ironman 70.3 Philippines, which attracted close to 2,000 triathletes.
