FORMER vice presidential candidate Walden Bello was arrested on Monday, August 8, 2022, over cyber libel charges.

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Director Brigadier General Remus Medina said Bello, who was a “human rights activist,” was arrested in his home in Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City around 5 p.m. during the service of an arrest warrant issued by Davao City Regional Trial Court Branch 10 judge Retrina Espe Fuentes.

Bello is facing two counts of cyber libel charges with P48,000 recommended bail each.

The charges against Bello were filed by Jeffry Tupas, the former public information officer of the Davao City Government during Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio's time as mayor.

Bello accused Tupas of involvement in illegal drugs and posted it on his social media account.

This came after Tupas attended a birthday party in which police found P1.5 million worth of illegal drugs.

Tupas had left the party before the police came for the conduct of a raid where 17 people were arrested.

Tupas resigned and, at the same time, was fired by Duterte. (SunStar Philippines)
