A TOTAL of 11 groups have already registered to compete in the two categories of Indak-Indak sa Kadayawan, said event organizer Harold Quibete on Monday, August 8.

For the open category, there some of the registered contingents are the Samal Island City College - Local Government Unit of the Island Garden City of Samal, Palabuniyan Cultural Dance Ensemble - LGU of the Municipality of Pikit in North Cotabato, and Sidlakan Performing Ensemble of the Municipality of Malita in Davao Occidental.

Also competing are the Sikat Performing Arts of Sultan Kudarat, Youth Olmag Performing Arts Guild of Kidapawan City, and defending champion Sindac Anib Performing Ensemble from Bislig City, Surigao del Sur to defend their title, which they won in 2019.

For the school-based category, defending champion Sta. Ana National High School Performing Arts Guild is competing, as well as Doña Carmen Denia National High School, Bernardo D. Carpio National High School Performing Ensemble, and Mabini National High School Apo Duwaling Dance Company.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority in Davao Region (Tesda-Davao) is also joining for the first time, competing in the school-based category with help from a foreign choreographer from Nigeria.

Quibete said they made sure the Nigerian choreographer is well-briefed regarding the styles of the said street dance competition.

“Ato gyod gi-himamat og tarong ilang Nigerian na chorepgrapher, kay kabalo ta lahi ang African way of dancing. Sa atong indigenous people (IP), grounded atong movement so they were made to understand na i-incorporate to (We met with the Nigerian choreographer because we know the African way of dancing is different. For our IPa, their movement is more grounded so we made sure they will incorporate that),” Quibete said during an interview with Davao City Disaster Radio.

The groups have two options for their Indak-Indak performance, which are either to do an authentic presentation or an adaptation.

“They can do an authentic presentation patterned on any of the 11 tribes, tapos i-endorse siya sa (then we will endorse it to the) deputy mayor. Pero karon (But now) if I’m not mistaken, halos tanan sa atong contingents (most of the contingents), they are doing adaptation or interpretation of a particular fable to folklore, so freestyle ilang creativity,” he said.

The Indak-Indak sa Kadayawan will happen on August 20 from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm, covering three routes until the grand showdown at San Pedro Square. ICM
