University guard dies in early morning road crash

A SECURITY guard of a university died after he was hit by a tricycle and ran over by a carry van on Circumferential Road South in Barangay Alijis, Bacolod City around 5 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2022.

Captain Elmer Bonilla, commander of Police Station 7, identified the fatality as Louie Vergara, 41, of Purok Ezekiel in the city's Barangay Handumanan.

The victim worked as a security guard of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod City.

Bonilla said Vergara was driving his Yamaha Sniper motorcycle when he was hit by a tricycle driven by John Dayday, 23, a resident of Purok Malapitan, Barangay Alijis.

He said Vergara, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown off from his motorcycle and ran over by a Suzuki Carry van driven by Warren Blance, 42, a resident of Barangay Pahanocoy.

Investigation showed that Dayday, who was heading south, tried to overtake the van but failed to return to his lane, causing a collision with Vergara's motorcycle.

Vergara, who was on his way to report to his work, sustained serious injuries and died on the spot.

Bonilla said Dayday and Blance also voluntarily surrendered at the police station and will be charged for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.

Fellow workers, students and other employees of the university took to social media to express their sadness over the death of Vergara.

They also extended condolences to the family of the victim.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man also died while his girlfriend was injured after they were hit by a vehicle near the Bacolod Government Center, Barangay Villamonte, Bacolod City around 11:05 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2022.

Police identified the fatality as Leonardo Grate, a resident of Purok Punay, Barangay Mansilingan.

Injured was his girlfriend Perialde Ma Erika, 22, of the said village.

Major Ritchie Gohee, commander of Police Station 4, said Grate was driving his motorcycle along with his back rider, Ma Erika, when they were hit by a jeepney driven by Lenie Mahinay, 39, of Purok Camingawan, Barangay Estefania.

He said Mahinay, who was traveling from east to west direction, was tailing the motorcycle when he lost control of the vehicle.

Due to the strong impact, he added, Grate and his girlfriend were thrown off from the motorcycle.

Both of them sustained serious injuries.

They were brought to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, but Grate did not survive.

Gohee said Mahinay, who voluntarily surrendered to Police Station 4, also admitted that he was under the influence of intoxicating liquor when he hit the victims.

He said the family of the victims refused for a settlement and they will file the case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, serious physical injury and damage to property against the suspect.
