A JUVENILE brahminy kite is now under the care of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Regional Wildlife Rescue Center in Baclay, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur for proper care and treatment.

Rosevirico Tan, DENR regional information officer, said Wednesday, August 10, that the bird was retrieved by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro)-Ramon Magsaysay personnel on Monday, August 8, in Purok 1, Poblacion village, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur.

Tan said it was reported that the bird was caught when it accidentally fell from its nest in Malobo village, Mahayag and was domesticated by Zenas Dangase for about three months to ensure it can already survive on its own.

Tan said the bird was turned over to Mahayag Vice Mayor Lester Ace Espina in coordination with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office.

“Upon initial assessment made by the Cenro (of Magsaysay, Zamboanga del Sur) personnel, the bird was found healthy and in good condition,” Tan said.

He said the bird will be treated at the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center before its release back to its natural habitat.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species listed Brahminy Kite as Least Concerned, however, the species is on the decline in some parts of Asia. (SunStar Zamboanga)
