Lydia de Vega dies at 57

PHILIPPINE sports icon Lydia de Vega, 57, succumbed to breast cancer on Wednesday evening, August 10, 2022, her daughter announced.

"On behalf of our family, it is with absolute grief that I announce the death of my mother, Lydia De Vega, this evening, August 10, 2022, at the Makati Medical Center," De Vega’s daughter Stephanie Mercado de Koenigswarter said.

"She fought the very good fight and is now at peace," she added.

De Vega has fought breast cancer since 2018.

In the 1980’s, De Vega was considered Asia’s fastest woman due to her achievement in Track and Field sport.

She brought pride to the country by bagging several gold medals in competitions abroad, including the Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and Asian Athletics Championship. (SunStar Philippines)
