Tourism chief: Cebu soon to have 'tourist rest stops'

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) is eyeing to establish four tourist rest stops in Cebu for travelers to have a place where they can stay and rest during their visit to tourist destinations in the province.

This was announced by Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco during the Go Explore Cebu: Summit at the convention hall of SM Seaside City Cebu on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022.

Frasco said two rest stops will be constructed in southern Cebu and two in northern Cebu, and these will be managed by DOT.

Each facility will be up to 300 square meters in size and will have clean and sanitary restrooms, information booths, and other amenities, ensuring that tourists will experience convenience during their stay in Cebu.

These facilities will also serve as venues for the local government units (LGUs) to promote their local products.

Frasco said the DOT is now coordinating and negotiating with certain LGUs in the implementation of this project.

“The purpose of this is to ensure that our tourists who are going to our tourist destinations in the north ug in the south have a place where they can rest in the middle of their journey,” Frasco said in a mix of Cebuano and English.

Luzon and Mindanao regions will also have a tourist rest stop.

The groundbreaking of these facilities is eyed by the end part of the year.

Frasco shared that the country’s tourism industry is slowly getting back on its feet from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

She noted the Philippines is sixth in Asean region and 75th in the world in the ranking of the most visited country by tourists.

The tourism chief vowed that the agency will not only focus on reviving the industry, but improve the ranking of the country in global tourism.

This will be done through intensive and comprehensive collaboration with the LGUs, which she called “shared tourism governance.”

Frasco said more listening tours and inter-agency collaboration will be done this year to make sure that challenges in the tourism industry will be identified and addressed at the grassroots level.
