CATHOLICS in Palawan are set to launch a year-long celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christianity in the island on August 28, 2022.

In a report by CBCP News, the launching of the celebration is set to take place at the St. Augustine Church in Cuyo, Palawan with a Mass to be officiated by Taytay Bishop Broderick Pabillo.

"God sent missionaries to Palawan to introduce to us to His love," Pabillo said.

“Faith did not just arrive in Palawan. It has stayed and is now rooted in our islands,” he added.

CBCP News noted that the celebration will take center stage at the St. Augustine Church, which is the oldest parish in the entire province.

Founded by Spanish Augustinian missionaries in 1622, the parish is now administered by the Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay.

Aside from the launch, the year-long event will also feature a pilgrimage of the Mission Cross across the island.

Palawan's celebration comes months after the close of the 500th year of Christianity in the Philippines celebration last April. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
