Man who lost job kills self

A 34-year-old construction worker who lost his job following a workplace accident took his own life by allegedly stabbing himself and slashing his neck in what the relatives believed could be caused by depression due to loss of income.

Police Staff Sergeant Jessie James Galo of Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Station 3 in Barangay Basak said the victim possibly felt anxious about his situation since he could no longer report to work after the accident.

Galo revealed the victim was recuperating from his injury at the house of his aunt (whose name is withheld for privacy) and was scheduled to return to his home province where he would continue the healing process.

The police investigator said the family was shocked when they discovered the victim inside his room already bloodied with a knife in his possesion around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.

His aunt said the victim had multiple stab wounds to his body and neck and even asked for help to bring him to the hospital after realizing what he had done. But the latter died at the hospital two hours later due to fatal injuries.

Galo said the victim admitted to hurting himself when police visited him at the hospital.

Following the incident, the police reminded people suffering from depression not to repress their emotions and ask for help from their families or call on the local hope hotlines 2919 (toll-free for Globe and TM subscribers) and 1158 (other networks). (HIC)
