POLICE arrested a college student for his involvement in a collision that killed a senior high school student earlier this year.

They served the warrant issued by Municipal Circuit Trial Court Judge Romeo Bulotano against Hermenio Lasala Jr. at his home in Purok Bolinao 2, Barangay Sillon, Bantayan, Cebu, at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022.

Lasala was charged with reckless imprudence resulting to homicide for the death of 18-year-old Ben Herbert Salve of Barangay Baigad, also in Bantayan.

Bail was set at P26,000.

Last June 26, Lasala, who was reportedly drunk, lost control of his vehicle and hit Salve’s motorcycle in the opposite lane.

Salve, who suffered severe injuries, was brought to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, where he died after five days.

The cause of death was brain herniation.

P01 Florante Desucatan, assistant investigator of the Bantayan Police Station, said the victim’s family filed a case against Lasala when it received no replies when it reached out to the latter’s family several times to ask for cash assistance.

“They may reach an amicable settlement because Lasala’s family is now willing to sit down and talk with the victim’s family to discuss financial compensation,” Desucatan said in Cebuano.

Lasala also has a pending warrant for illegal gambling. (GDC)
