TWO adult men have died from drowning in the towns of Medellin and Pinamungajan in Cebu Province.

On Monday morning, Aug. 15, 2022, an 85-year-old widower was found floating in seawaters off Barangay Daanlungsod, Medellin town in northern Cebu.

The casualty, identified as Juan Tundag of Purok Bombil, Barangay Daanlungsod, was already dead when residents performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation to revive him.

SSgt. Glenn Sollano, investigating officer of Medellin Police Station, told SunStar Cebu that Tundag was discovered by residents floating around 7:30 a.m. Monday. The incident was reported to their station later at 8:20 a.m.

Tundag was brought to Bogo-Medellin Medical Center where the attending physician pronounced him dead.

The doctor established drowning as the cause of his death.

Tundag was living alone in his house as his children are working in Cebu City, while his wife is already dead.

Sollano found out in their initial investigation that Tundag usually went swimming in the area.

Meanwhile, a beach outing in Barangay Tajao, Pinamungajan, Cebu on Sunday, Aug. 14 led to tragedy after a farmer drowned.

Executive Master Sergeant Peter Cuanso, chief investigator of the Pinamungajan Police Station, identified the casualty as Renario Abiso of Purok Mahogany, Barangay Punod, Pinamungajan.

Cuanso said the incident happened around 12:30 p.m., but it was only reported to the station at 1:20 p.m.

According to Gena Mazo, Abiso’s niece, her uncle was sitting on the shore while they were unloading things from their car. Then they heard shouts that someone was drowning.

Mazo said she couldn’t believe that the unconscious man that members of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office emergency team had recovered from the water was her uncle.

Abiso was rushed to the Pinamungajan District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival by attending physician Dr. Teresita Bocado.

The police concluded that there was no foul play involved in both incidents.

Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death in the world, with about 236,000 people drowning every year, according to a United Nations report. In the Philippines, the Department of Health has reported that over 3,000 Filipinos die each year from drowning.
