INSTEAD of stopping at a police checkpoint in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City, a driver of a motorcycle who was not wearing a helmet sped off.

Police gave chase and caught up with 20-year-old John Methew Sy Canindo, a resident of Barangay Bahay, Sibonga, Cebu, on R. Rabaya Road.

Lt. Col. Randy Caballes, Talisay City Police Station chief, said the incident happened Monday night, Aug. 15, 2022.

It turned out that the motorcycle was stolen and its owner is from Toledo City, he said.

Caballes said they learned that Canindo is facing several theft complaints in the cities of Lapu-Lapu and Talisay.

The police official believes the suspect may also be facing complaints in Cebu City, which is why he will coordinate with the Cebu City Police Office.

“The suspect is also facing a case for illegal drugs and stealing a motorcycle in Argao in 2019,” Caballes said in Cebuano.

Based on initial investigation, whenever Canindo fancied a motorcycle, he would befriend its owner. If the owner was a woman or gay, he would court them.

“One of his victims was a girl who later became his girlfriend. His other victims were owners whom he befriended. He would borrow their motorcycle and then not return it,” Caballes said in Cebuano.

Police also learned that Canindo was planning to sell the motorcycle and several cellphones that he had stolen to a friend.

Police are withholding the friend’s name as of press time.

They also found five sachets of suspected shabu in the suspect’s pocket.
