Malacañang Palace announced that August 19, 2022 is a special non-working day in Davao City as it celebrates the Kadayawan Festival.

“On 19 August 2022, Friday, the City of Davao will mark the celebration of the Indigenous People’s Day in relation to the Kadayawan Festival. It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Davao be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies, subject to the public health measures of the national government,” Marcos Jr., said in the Proclamation No. 39 released on August 15, 2022.

In his Kadayawan message, Marcos Jr. described Davao City as a "shining beacon of progress" amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I could not help but admire the story that Davao City has written through the years, in which it has emerged as among the country’s shining beacons of progress. It is with no doubt that Davaoenos have embodied solidarity and contributed wholeheartedly in weaving their own tale of nation-building to bring their beloved city to where it is today,” Marcos said.

This year's Kadayawan would be the first large festival in the country to have a face-to-face celebration since the pandemic.

The celebration, which was first called the Apo Duwaling Festival in the 1980s, honors Davao City's abundant harvest and peace among all the tribes residing inside its boundaries.

The Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival, held in August, was given a new name in 1988. As one of the biggest and liveliest festivals in the Philippines, the Kadayawan "King of Festivals" has gained recognition on a national and international level over the years.

Several activities have been made to celebrate Kadayawan including the Kadayawan Tribal Village, Bantawan, cultural shows, and Hiyas sa Kadayawan, Indak Indak sa Kadayawan, Pamulak, Pitik sa Kadayawan, and Sayaw Kadayawan.

Meanwhile, to ensure the safety of every Dabawenyo and tourist during the celebration, Chief of Public Safety and Security Command Center retired Police Lt. Col. Angel Sumagaysay, who also heads the security of Kadayawan Festival, told SunStar Davao that the 10,000 personnel are for the official Kadayawan activities but they may add more to secure the events of individual organizers.
