THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has extended support to the livelihood undertaking of a group of women Friday, August 26, in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur.

Anchored with the policy under Executive Order No. 70 institutionalizing the whole-of-nation approach for collective participation and action in harmonizing government development, a total of P350,000 was turned over by the DOST to the Women Empowerment Movement Rural Improvement Club (WEM-RIC) for the establishment of the rice mill and ZamPen native chicken production in Dimalinao village, Bayog.

Engr. Gerardo Parot, Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Science and Technology director, said the assistance is part of the interventions identified for the local Grants-in-Aid (GIA) project entitled, “Inclusivity of Science, Technology, and Innovation as a source of sustainable livelihood in mainstreaming women in heavily Communist-influenced communities in Dimalinao, Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur.”

Parot said the project aims to help the local communist community become productive through an enterprising women’s group.

He said they will also capacitate the 22 members of WEM-RIC with proper knowledge and skills in raising the ZamPen native chicken.

The Zampen native chicken is a new chicken breed that has been developed by the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in collaboration with the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).

DOST’s GIA program aims to harness the country’s scientific and technological capabilities to spur and attain sustainable economic growth and development.

It is also designed to help improve productivity and the quality of life of Filipinos by generating and promoting appropriate technologies.

Also, it aims to strengthen the participation of various science and technology sectors, particularly in research and development, promotion, technology transfer and utilization, human resources development, information dissemination, advocacy, and linkages. (SunStar Zamboanga)
