THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is conducting a probe into the September 1 ambush that resulted in injury to Cebu Port Authority (CPA) lawyer Karen Quiñanola-Gonzales and her 19-year-old son.

NBI spokesperson Giselle Dumlao said the relatives have requested the NBI for a parallel investigation on the incident.

“The NBI is conducting an investigation on the said case,” she said.

The Central Office assigned the Cebu District Office to handle the probe.

Gonzales and her son were on their way home on the evening of September 1 when they were waylaid by two unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City.

The gunmen fired upon the victim’s vehicle, particularly on the driver’s side, where Gonzales was seated.

Gonzales sustained a gunshot wound on her lower left jaw that penetrated her neck, while her son had a minor gunshot wound on his back.

Police earlier said they are looking at three angles in the case, such as the possibility that it was work related or personal.

The Free Legal Assistance Group (Flag) condemned the attack, which is the first recorded assault against a lawyer under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Flag called for the immediate investigation and resolution of the case. (SunStar Philippines)
