THE Talisay City Government will join in the celebration of World Cleanup Day with a coastal cleanup drive on Saturday, September 17, 2022.

Personnel of Coastal Resources and Ecotourism Research, Development and Extension Center (Crerdec) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will also participate in the activity.

Joselito Sumabat, senior science research specialist of Crerdec, said the sight of garbage floating in the seas off Talisay is now an alarming state, thus the need for a cleanup activity.

On the same day, the Crerdec will also conduct an information dissemination program to inform the residents about proper waste disposal.

During a seminar between the city and barangay officials, non-government organizations and Crerdec personnel on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, the attendees discussed their plans for Saturday's activity.

Sumabat said that based on their study, they found out that some fish would eat the garbage floating in the sea, especially the macro and microplastic.

He added that it could not be avoided that the fish that have eaten the plastic wastes could also be eaten by humans.

Fish that have been found to contain microplastics reportedly poses hazard to human health.

Vice Mayor Richard Francis "Choy" Aznar also revealed that garbage in Talisay is a huge problem.

Aznar said they will revisit the city's garbage ordinance so that garbage would not end up in rivers and the ocean. (BBT, TPT)
