Lacson: Why grandparents are special to our children

Here in the Philippines, the second Sunday of September is also known to be the day when Grandparents' Day is celebrated. In fact, when I was still working for a mall company a decade ago, Grandparents' Day is one of the most anticipated and biggest celebrations that we look forward to next to Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day events. While this yearly celebration may have lost its hype due to the pandemic, it is still a welcome idea to celebrate this day and show grandparents how special they are.

Here are some ways on how to make grandparents feel loved on this day:

1. Ask your kids to make a handmade card.

Nothing beats a special and heartwarming message that is a labor of kids' creativity and enthusiasm. Their innate sincerity and fondness for their grandparents must exude in their simple drawings and words of affection.

2. Treat them to a hearty food treat.

With the restrictions now almost down, it is also a nice way to celebrate this day over good food and a warm ambiance. To avoid the long queues waiting and the probability of not being accommodated in the restaurant, it is best to set an appointment or a reservation for your group before heading out to the restaurant.

3. Buy them some nice presents.

If you have the means to spare some cash, then it's also a good idea to look for something memorable that your kids can wrap up and give as a gift to their grandparents. The item will always depend on the personality, interest, or even the need of the person you are gifting, so that will wlays be considered when choosing the perfect present for them.

4. Visit and spend a day at their home.

Being away from them and this time apart from them certainly makes all of your hearts grow fonder, as the saying goes. Take this as the perfect opportunity to visit them at their place and spend some quality time along with your children.

5. Always remember them even if it's not grandparents' day.

Thinking about them often and always making them feel special in so many possible ways is always something that we must do for our parents and grandparents. We don't have to wait for this day to express our love and care for them but a simple text or message asking how they are and sending them warm greetings is always a loving thing to do.

From an unknown quote: "A grandparent is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend."
