When it comes to solid and relevant experiences, older women reign. Their experiences in handling difficult situations, intense disagreements, and irreconcilable conflicts make them more logical and understanding.

When it comes to wisdom, older women carry it with credibility. They are more stable and less insecure.

It must be the mother instinct in them that can make them tame any disorder. It may be the gentleness in them that can soften one’s mood and decision.

When an older woman grows old gracefully and joyfully, it looks and feels like she witnessed a beautiful life and a meaningful past.

One older woman that defines all these is Gov. Corazon Nuñez Malanyaon, the woman in pink.

I just saw her a few days back and she reminds me that growing old is and will always be wonderful.

It’s a sign that one has conquered the many challenges in life.

At 73, Gov. Malanyaon is still very beautiful, less wrinkled in her age. But wrinkles are trails of triumphs in life. Each line means we have survived in life.

Aside from her beauty and grace, she has always established the credibility that made her win the trust and confidence of the people in her community.

And when a good friend shared what and how she knew Gov. Malanyaon from the start of her promising career serving people, the more she comes out so amazing.

Gov. Malanyaon, the woman who turned Davao Oriental into a gentle pink abode, is not an ordinary politician. She is a lawyer and an accountant. She is a leader, not just a holder of a political position.

She started as an OIC (officer in charge) Councilor of Davao City in 1986. At that time, Former President Rodrigo R. Duterte (FPRRD) was the OIC-Vice Mayor while Zafiro L. Respicio was the OIC-Mayor.

In 1988 during the election, Gov. Malanyaon became the number one councilor in the third district while it was also the start of the leadership of FPRRD as mayor of Davao City.

Since then, Gov. Malanyaon had always been the number one councilor for the entire three terms.

Because she is originally from Davao Oriental, she eventually decided to serve her hometown.

She was tried and tested when Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) hit the province severely in 2012. It was recorded as the strongest tropical typhoon that ever hit the southern Philippines.

Most parts of Davao Oriental were literally down. It claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands of families. It looked like it had to start from zero.

But there was a dramatic turn of events in Davao Oriental with the strong leadership of Gov. Malanyaon. It rose from the ashes bringing real hope to the locals.

Now, Davao Oriental is known for its tourism highways from the municipalities of Pintatagan to Boston. The province is known to be the most promising paradise in Davao Region and perhaps in Mindanao.

The province was never discovered and explored by many, but Gov. Malanyaon led the many developments that made Davao Oriental the fastest growing economic and tourism industry.

With the opening of an airport in Mati City soon and the preservation of Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the province will highlight the southern Philippines on the map.

While my roots are from Davao Oriental from the Mandaya heritage, I will always look up to the woman who initiated real transformations in this promising tourism and investment destination.

My great admiration for Gov. Malanyaon who is aging with grace and dignity.
