THE Art Association of Bacolod-Negros (AABN) with the Balik Yuhum Foundation will mount the first On-The-Spot MassKara Painting Competition in celebration of art and creativity this MassKara Festival 2022.

The group is calling on artists who are bonafide Bacolod residents to join and interpret the theme "Balik Yuhum Ipadayon."

The painting competition will be on October 7, 2022 at the Robinsons Place Bacolod from 2 to 6 p.m. which will be an on-site art event for the city's artists screened by the art association beforehand.

The official contestants will be painting on blank masks instead of the usual canvas or paper.

“We believe that the artists of Bacolod City will have a great venue to show what they got,” AABN president Ihvonie “Tey” Sevilleno, said.

AABN, as one of the oldest art groups in the Philippines, would like to establish this art competition in the MassKara Festival this year and hopefully to be continued hereon, Sevilleno also said.

She said Art Association of Bacolod-Negros was vital during the birth of MassKara as their artists members like Ely Santiago, Rodney Martinez, and Roy Aguilar were also the ones who helped in conceiving the idea of doing masks for the October festivities.

The late Ely Santiago was an AABN founding member and cartoonist who coined the title of the MassKara festival, meaning ‘mass’ for people and ‘kara’ for face, she also said.

Sevilleno recalled that it was then a challenge for the art association in the 80’s on how to develop the level of art awareness in Negros while also helping Bacolenos to build small industries like mask-making and crafts in the barangays.

The first On-The-Spot MassKara Painting Competition is open to all artists of Bacolod aged 18 years old or older.

Application to be one of the official contestants for the competition is free and once chosen, the blank masks to be painted on and the other materials will be provided by the organizers.

The prizes are 20,000 pesos for the First Prize, 15,000 pesos for the Second Prize, and 10,000 pesos for the Third Prize. There will be other special prizes and awards to be given.

Application for participation will be until September 29, 2022. For full details, check out Art Association of Bacolod-Negros FB Page: OfficialAABNegros or their Instagram: @artbacolodnegros. (PR)
