COUNCILOR Claudio Puentevella has urged the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) to intensify its campaign against illegal drugs during the celebration of the MassKara Festival in October this year.

Puentevella said yesterday, September 22, that the BCPO led by its director Colonel Thomas Joseph Martir should strictly enforce Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002 to prevent the sale, use and distribution of party drugs and other contraband during the festival.

He said the upcoming celebration of the MassKara Festival would attract hundreds of visitors and tourists which may provide an avenue for drug peddlers to sale and distribute party drugs.

The intensified enforcement of RA 9165, he added, will prevent the proliferation of party drugs and other contraband during the festival which is detrimental to the safety and well-being of the youth and the general public.

MassKara Festival will be celebrated from October 1 to 23, 2022 after two years of hiatus due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Puentevella also urged the BCPO along with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to intensify the enforcement of RA 10568 or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 in the upcoming festival.

Puentevella said it is expected that during the MassKara Festival, numerous tourists and residents will consume alcohol in various establishments within the city.

He said that driving under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicated substances would impair a driver’s perception and reduce the ability to judge distance, speed and the movement of other vehicles which can cause fatal road accidents which is detrimental to the safety of the general public.*
