DAVAO City Covid-19 Task Force said on September 21, 2022 that the number of recent deaths caused by Covid-19 is more worrying than the number of active cases.
In a radio interview, spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser said the number of deaths as of late is more significant despite the downtrend of active Covid-19 cases.
Based on the Task Force’s latest monitoring for Week 37 from September 11 to 17, the daily positivity rate dropped from ten percent from an average of 15 to 18 percent the previous weeks.
This is equivalent to 436 confirmed cases for the said period, while 516 cases were recorded the week before.
“That means nagbaba na gyod ta less than a thousand na ang cases (That means the number of cases decreased to less than a thousand) but what worries us is dili na ingana ka-significant ang number of cases (the number of cases is not as significant), what is significant nowadays is the number of deaths,” she said.
During the same period, 16 deaths were recorded, seven of which are senior citizens, four aged between 50 to 59 years old, and two are minors – one is in the five to 12 years old age bracket and the inter is less than five years old.
Of the 16, nine were unvaccinated, two already had their first booster dose, and the rest are vaccinated.
Before this, Schlosser said Covid-19 deaths in the city were slowly increasing – 19 deaths from September 4 to 10, 17 deaths on August 28 to September 3, and 14 deaths from August 21 to 27.
Schlosser said the number of deaths is worrying. “Kasi kining Covid-19, by this time dapat preventable na unta ang kamatayon ani (Deaths should have been prevented) because we already have our vaccine,” she said.
The spokesperson reiterates the importance of being fully vaccinated, including two booster doses, against Covid-19 to prevent developing a severe and critical case of the disease.
“Naa tay Saturday and Sunday na vaccination, so I hope dili na siya rason sa atong katawhan na dili makapabakuna because naay trabaho (We already have a Saturday and Sunday vaccination so I hope the people will not use their work schedule as an excuse),” Schlosser said. ICM
