5 things you need to know before playing Genshin Impact

The Genshin Impact 3.0 update introduces all new environments to explore, new adventures to embark on and more new playable characters to collect, ushering in more gamers wanting to dip into the vast, rich open-world of Genshin Impact.

For anyone interested in getting into the game, here are five things you should know:

Open world

You play as the Traveler. The story follows the Traveler’s journey of finding their missing twin, who they were separated from at the beginning of the game.

On your journey you venture through the world of Teyvat, which is filled with all sorts of characters to meet, challenges to face, stories to dive into and regions to explore.

Teyvat is composed of the seven major nations of Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine, Natlan, and Snezhnaya; each ruled by a different god. So expect a lot of traveling.

A pro tip for beginners: make sure to unlock all the Waypoints on the map; they allow you to teleport anywhere you want to go.

The characters

You’ve probably heard about the cute, anime-style characters on the game’s roster.

Characters come in different rarities, all with different weapons, fighting styles and elemental abilities like fire, earth, nature, ice, lightning, wind and water.

The game uses a four-party system where players mainly play with a team of four characters they can switch through. You’ll eventually be given three characters for free (Amber, Kaeya and Lisa) to complete your starter party of four.

Every player is different; some want characters for their abilities while others will want characters simply because they’re cute. There are currently 53 playable characters available so there’s sure to be a character that suits your fancy.

Gacha system

To unlock new characters, you’ll need to try your luck with the game’s “gacha” system.

The “gacha” system is where players can unlock featured characters or weapons by making a random draw from a pool of items. To draw from this in-game lottery, you’ll need Wishes and to get Wishes you’ll need Primogems, premium in-game currency used to buy Wishes among other things.

You can earn Primogems for free by completing in-game tasks, but they’re not given out generously.

Chances of pulling good items are scarce; you can use up your free draws quickly. Players can increase their chances to receive something favorable by paying real money to buy more Primogems.

Get ready to grind

Advancing through the game will require you to invest a good amount of time in leveling up the characters you prefer playing with or—as seasoned players call them—your mains.

You’ll want to get familiar with Artifacts, items that can be equipped on characters to increase their stats, and determine which ones bring out the best performance in your characters.

Unfortunately, you don’t get to just buy the Artifacts you want. Collecting Artifacts will take you a while and leveling up Artifacts is going to be even trickier since the system depends heavily on pure luck.

Never-ending fun

The world is ever expanding as new updates add new characters, features, stories and regions to the game.

New quests pop up every day and you’ll never be short of opportunities to level up.

There’s always something new to discover every time you log on so don’t worry about getting bored any time soon.

According to its Wikipedia page,“Genshin Impact” is an action role-playing game released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, iOS and Android in 2020, and on PlayStation 5 in 2021. It is set for release on Nintendo Switch.
