Marcos suspends classes, work due to ‘Karding’

PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. ordered on Sunday, September 25, 2022, the suspension of classes in all levels and work in public schools and government offices in several areas in Luzon on Monday, September 26, due to the onslaught of Super Typhoon Karding (Noru).

Marcos said he approved the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to suspend the classes and work in the National Capital Region, Region 1 (Ilocos), Region 2 (Cagayan), Cordillera, Region 3 (Central Luzon), Region 4A (Calabarzon), Region 4B (Mimaropa) and Region 5 (Bicol) to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the safety of the general public.

The recommendation does not include frontline agencies that are providing emergency services amid disasters.

“The same course of action for private companies, offices and schools is left to the discretion of their respective heads,” the recommendation reads.

As of 4 p.m. Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Karding was spotted over the coastal waters of Burdeos, Polillo Islands, Quezon, packing with maximum winds of 195 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, gusts of up to 240 km/h, and central pressure of 920 hPa. It was moving westward at 20 km/h.

The following provinces/ areas were placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 5:

* Polillo Islands

* Extreme northern portion of Quezon (the northern and central portions of General Nakar, the northeastern portion of Infanta)

* Extreme southern portion of Aurora (Dingalan)

* Extreme southern portion of Nueva Ecija (General Tinio, City of Gapan, Peñaranda, San Isidro, Cabiao),

* Pampanga (Arayat, Candaba, Santa Ana, San Luis)

* Eastern and central portions of Bulacan (San Rafael, Angat, Norzagaray, Doña Remedios Trinidad, San Ildefonso, San Miguel), and *The extreme northern portion of Rizal (Rodriguez), the eastern portion of Pampanga (Candaba, Arayat)

Typhoon-force winds with extreme threat to life and property are expected in these areas within 12 hours.

Under TCWS 4 were:

* Calaguas Islands

* Central and southern portion of Nueva Ecija (Cuyapo, Nampicuan, Guimba, Licab, Zaragoza, San Antonio, San Leonardo, Jaen, Santa Rosa, Palayan City, Gabaldon, Laur, Cabanatuan City, Aliaga, Quezon, Santo Domingo, Talavera, Llanera, General Mamerto Natividad, Rizal, Bongabon, Talugtug, Science City of Muñoz)

* Northern portion of Metro Manila (Marikina, Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, and Quezon City)

* Rest of Pampanga, the rest of Bulacan, Zambales, the northern portion of Bataan (Dinalupihan, Hermosa, Morong, Orani, Samal, Abucay)

* Southern portion of Pangasinan (Bautista, Alcala, Bayambang, Mangatarem, Urbiztondo, Aguilar, Bugallon, Infanta, Dasol, Burgos, Mabini, Labrador), and

* Extreme northern portion of Laguna (Famy, Siniloan, Santa Maria, Pangil)
