(UPDATED) A SECURITY guard who has not received his salary for several months could hardly afford to support his wife and six young children.

His family was going hungry, which forced him to resort to robbery. However, his misfortune was compounded when he was arrested.

Renante Joverin Sarquilla, 46, was charged with robbery and illegal possession of firearms on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Sarquilla held up the Seaoil Gasoline Station in Purok 3, Barangay Bonbon in the western town of Aloguinsan, Cebu at 12:32 p.m. on Monday, September 26.

The native of Barangay Hilaan, Bontoc town, Southern Leyte fired his gun on the ground, which sent pump boys Renante Padinas Biton and Reymond Pinote scampering for safety.

Sarquilla then fled with P4,250 of the gas station’s earnings.

When police reviewed the footage of the surveillance camera, they saw the accused arrive on a black Honda motorcycle.

Even though he was wearing a jacket and a helmet that covered his face, Pinote, one of the pump boys, recognized him as a regular customer.

Police and Pinote went to Sarquilla’s house in Purok 7, Barangay Poblacion in the town, but was told that he already reported for duty at the Pinamungajan District Hospital.

Lieutenant Roberto Bardnido Jr., chief of the Aloguinsan Police Station, said they immediately coordinated with Major Vincent Zozobrado, chief of the Pinamungajan Police Station.

When police arrived at the hospital, they found the black Honda motorcycle parked at the receiving area for patients.

Pinote also positively identified Sarquilla, which prompted police to handcuff him and place him under arrest.

The cash was recovered from the accused’s locker along with a .45 pistol with two live bullets.

Sarquilla confessed to the crime, saying his family’s dire circumstances had forced him to commit it.

He told police he hasn’t received his salary since July and his six young children were going hungry.

Lieutenant Bardnido, for his part, said Sarquilla has a clean record, adding that the suspect has never been involved in any illegal activity.

He said Sarquilla has been working as a security guard at the Pinamungajan District Hospital for the last 18 years. (GPL)
