THE Lapu-Lapu City Government, through the Public Employment Service Office (Peso), has extended employment facilitation services to over 4,000 workers retrenched and displaced from different factories in the city.
The over 4,000 workers were reportedly retrenched from factories, particularly from Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) and Cebu Light Industrial Park (Clip) Monday, September 26, 2022.
In his social media post, Peso head Kim Francisco said the managements reportedly coordinated with the Mayor’s Office, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO), and Department of Labor and Employment in Central Visayas (DOLE 7) to mitigate the adverse impact of their retrenchment program.
Francisco said displaced workers reportedly flocked to their office following the advice of Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan earlier to register themselves at the Peso for them to get a chance in landing a job.
But Francisco said their office is not just accommodating retrenched workers from the companies as they are also open to everyone looking for work.
According to the city’s Public Information Office, five MEZ locators that manufacture clothes reportedly saw the need to downsize their manpower through a retrenchment program.
“As the world is now on the brink of global recession, with higher than expected inflation and the global financial conditions are becoming tighter, our business and that of our customers are not an exemption especially being classified as a non-essential luxury product,” read their official statement.
Francisco noted this as the biggest retrenchment amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, saying there were about 3,000 retrenched workers last year.
But he stressed that the downsizing of manpower in the companies is only temporary and would probably last within three to six months.
This, as he emphasized that the manpower needs of manufacturing companies are seasonal.
Meanwhile, Francisco said the mayor will again open another job fair this coming November 18, dubbed as “Fiesta Job Fair.” (MKG)
