A 59-year-old man who claimed to be an airport employee was engaged in a vehicular accident at a national highway in Barangay Suba, Samboan town, southern Cebu on Friday at 11:13 p.m., September 30, 2022.

The man whose name is Damie Rosales Aranas, Jr., 59, of Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City, identified himself as the operations officer of Mactan Cebu International Airport.

Police Staff Sergeant Serge Jeramis of Samboan Police Station said in an interview that Aranas was attending a fiesta celebration at the house of his relative in Samboan and was driving his Toyota Corolla Big Body color blue (UNZ 241) with another companion towards Ginatilan town to buy something when he encroached the opposite lane while manuevering a curve, hitting a Honda XRM motorcycle driven by Dalahikan, Samboan Barangay Councilor Leonardo Tolentin Belangdal from the opposite direction.

Aranas was reportedly under the influence of liquor at the time of the incident.

The barangay councilor sustained injuries after being thrown off the motorcycle due to the impact.

Aranas reportedly continued driving prompting another motorcycle to catch him and inform him that he had hit somebody.

Upon learning, Aranas suddenly made a u-turn to check on the victim but hit a Rusi motorcycle driven by a certain Adulfo Ontal Ferraren, 53, of Barangay Poblacion, Ginatilan, while on the way.

According to some witnesses, Aranas was driving very fast and he was zigzagging in and out of lanes prior to the incident.

The barangay councilor was brought to Samboan Rural Health Unit (RHU) for treatment, while the driver of the Rusi motorcycle was taken to a hospital in Malabuyoc town.

Both parties, however, agreed to amicably settle the matter at the Samboan Police Station. (GPL, TPT)
