CONTINGENTS from two Cebu cities will participate in the prestigious Wonju Dynamic Dance Carnival in South Korea for three days of October this year.

The Lapu-Lapu City Performing Arts (LLCPA) and members of Toledo City’s Joyful Tribe will represent the country during the yearly dance competition.

In a statement posted on the Lapu-Lapu City Public Information Office’s Facebook page, Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, his wife and Lapu-Lapu City Rep. Maria Cynthia Chan and some city councilors will accompany the city’s official contingent to South Korea.

Lapu-Lapu’s official contingent consists of 26 performers and three support staff.

The group will showcase the city’s very own “Kadaugan sa Mactan” and “Garbo sa Mactan” during the three-day dance festival.

The mayor’s daughter, Barangay Pajo Councilor Jasmine “Daday” Chan, will portray Reyna Bulakna while John Kristoffer Rafols, the acting head of the City’s Tourism Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission, will play Magellan during the performance.

Although this will be the first time that Lapu-Lapu City will be joining the festival, Toledo City’s Joyful Tribe will be returning there as the defending champion of the festival’s Foreign Performance Group category, which it won last year.

Chan said they prepared a lot for the said competition since this is also a way to promote Lapu-Lapu City to the Koreans.

According to Chan, the City appropriated only P1 million for the preparations, including their contingent’s costumes and plane tickets.

Chan said the budget excludes the accommodation and food for the contingent during their stay in South Korea since these are free.

Not charged to the City

The mayor also clarified that his and the councilors’ expenses are not charged to the City Government, saying they would be spending personal money to show their support and boost the confidence of the contingent.

Chan said Toledo City may have also prepared a lot for this year’s competition as it will be defending its crown.

“It’s a challenge. It’s also nice because not only Lapu-Lapu is representing Cebu. We also have the City of Toledo, which is the defending champion,” he added.
