THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will reportedly extend assistance to more than 4,000 retrenched workers from different companies in Lapu-Lapu City.

This was disclosed by City Councilor Annabeth Cuizon to SunStar Cebu Monday, October 3, 2022, a day after their meeting with DSWD Undersecretary for Inclusive and Sustainable Peace Alan Tanjusay on Sunday, October 2.

In a social media post of DSWD, the regional office said it will be “the lead agency in this multi-stakeholders assistance and interventions for displaced workers.”

DSWD-Central Visayas Director Shalaine Marie Lucero, representatives of Lapu-Lapu City Government, Congress, and other offices were also present during the multi-stakeholders meeting on the retrenchment of the workers of the Sports City Incorporated at the Mactan Economic Zone, formerly known as Mactan Export Processing Zone.

“The meeting also discussed the process and responsibilities of the different agencies to ensure an orderly and organized profiling, assessment and distribution of assistance,” the regional office said.

Cuizon said the profiling of the retrenched workers will be done Tuesday, October 4.

The councilor, however, said only DSWD can disclose any further details about the assistance.

Cuizon was the proponent of the approved resolution requesting DSWD to provide assistance to the displaced workers as she noted the financial hardship that the affected workers will undergo due to unemployment. (MKG)
