THE Land Transportation Office-Davao Region (LTO-Davao) started apprehending motorists who are traversing bike lanes on October 5, 2022.
“Kanang bike lane, wala man gyud dapat mga four wheels ug motorized vehicles ang moanha sa bike lane (Bike lane should not be used by any four-wheeled and motorized vehicles),” LTO-Davao Regional Director Neil Cañedo said in an interview with SunStar Davao on October 4, 2022.
In a report by iFM 93.9 Davao, several motorists who have used the bike lane in Quirino Avenue have received citation tickets from the LTO, and their licenses have been confiscated. No exact numbers, however, were yet given as to the apprehended violators.
Cañedo said the action taken by the agency is based on the approved ordinance of Davao City and was also approved by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
The LTO-Davao regional director said that based on DOTr Joint Administrative Order 2020-001, motorists can only use the broken line of the bike lane.
“Ang next to bike lane kanang katunga giputol nga dalan diha dapat moagi ang mga motor nga 190cc pababa (motorcycles that are under 190cc can use the broken line next to the bike lane),” Cañedo said.
He added motor vehicles can also use the broken line if they will load and unload passengers while no motor vehicles should traverse on or use the green-paved marking.
Meanwhile, Cañedo assures bikers that they will be safe using the bike lane.
“I can assure them na [once] mogamit sila’g bike lane, [unya] kung mabanggaan silag motorized vehicle siguro i-charge gyud na og reckless offense or subject for revocation ang lisensya niya (sa nakabangga) [if they used the bike lane then a motorized vehicle will hit them, (the driver of the motorized vehicle) will be charged with reckless offense or his license will be subject for revocation],” Cañedo said.
