Legaspi: October is Rosary Month

THE month of October is dedicated to the Blessed Mother as Queen of the Most Holy Rosary. By tradition, Catholics all over the world would pray the Holy Rosary with family or community prayer daily during the whole month. But as years pass and as people turn to more secularism, the tradition is no longer practiced religiously. The praying of the rosary was replaced by many distractions that the material world has provided.

To appreciate the praying of the Holy Rosary this month, let us travel back in time and see how this practice has guided many Catholics in many instances of our history.

In 1206, Dominic de Guzmán of France had little success in the conversion of the Albigensians back to Catholicism until one day he received a vision of the Blessed Virgin, who gave him the rosary as a tool against heretics. From this story, many followers of St. Dominic developed the prayer to the Blessed Mother.

October 7, 1571 during the Battle of Lepanto, the Christian states met the powerful Ottoman Fleet. The Holy League was of no match to the Ottoman fleet. Pope Pius V called on the whole of Europe to pray the rosary for victory and preservation of the Catholic faith. A Rosary procession in Rome was led by the Pope. The Holy League won the battle and stopped the invasion of Italy.

Another story about the rosary was the Marian apparition in Fatima, Portugal. The Blessed Mother is known formally as "Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fatima." It was during this apparition that the Blessed Mother asked Jacinta Marto, Lucia dos Santos and Francisco Marto "to pray the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war."

Today, the country and the world are undergoing a great deal of crises. All human strength and knowledge could not overcome all sorts of problems faced by humanity. Covid-19 menace, environmental disturbance, earthquakes, super hurricanes and typhoons, storms of great strength, atmospheric issues, food shortage, bankruptcy, and name it, and it is a reality today. Most issues now are not man-made but they are natural catastrophes. How could we survive all these? Perhaps we have forgotten that history will tell us that our ancestors never forgot to ask for the aid of the Blessed Mother and She is always ready to help.

We are so engrossed with solving our problems on our own and we have forgotten to ask for the aid of the Divine and that of the Blessed Mother. Praying the Holy Rosary is the best defense that we have. This is a way for us to seek the intervention of the Father.

Lastly, let me share this story about the role of the Blessed Mother in our salvation. There was a poor soul in Purgatory who kept on praying the Rosary, then the Blessed Mother appeared and comforted the poor soul and promised to be back soon. The Blessed Mother went to see Jesus and asked him to save a soul in purgatory. She told Him that this soul will be under her protection. Jesus said to her, "I cannot deny You of that request, My dear Mother. The poor soul was then given a ticket to pass through the pearly gates."

Our country is dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Let us pray the rosary daily.

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us.
