A SEF-TAUGHT artist edged out her competitors during the on-the-spot MassKara painting contest of the Art Association of Bacolod-Negros (AABN) at Robinsons Place in Bacolod City on Friday, October 7, 2022.

Villamor, 22, of Barangay Vista Alegre received P20,000 in cash and a trophy from the organizers.

Her artwork was judged based on relevance to the theme, “Balik Yuhom,” artistic skill, quality and overall impression.

Villamor noted that she started doing commission works during the pandemic lockdowns.

“I mainly work with acrylic and also do commissioned murals around the city,” she said.

In second place was Ralph Anton Pingcale, a student of La Consolacion College Bacolod and a resident of Barangay Mandalagan.

The 20-year-old artist received P15,000 and a trophy.

Meanwhile, third placer Ronald Doydora, 22, of Barangay Villamonte, took home P10,000 in cash and a trophy.

Doydora is a Secondary Education student majoring in English.

During the competition, brushes and basic colors of paint were provided to the participants although they were allowed to bring their own brushes and other colors of paint along with studies or sketches for the painting.

Only materials that could be glued or attached are not allowed.

Judging the event were Rudy Reveche, Rodney Martinez and Aeson Baldevia while the organizers were Jave Javellana, Jaycee Seran and Philline Macaya.

Tey Sevillano, AABN president, said that 59 contestants are Bacolod residents and above 18 years old.

They were asked to send five photos of their original artworks so that AABN can screen them as official contestants, Sevillano said.

“Our aim is to continue the tradition that our founding fathers of AABN started in the 1980s when the concept of MassKara festival was born,” she said.

Sevillano lauded the Balik Yuhum Foundation, Robinsons Place Bacolod, Direk Rodney Ascalon, Team Acids and Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez for their support of this endeavor.
