A FORMER barangay captain of Gen. Climaco (Malubog), Toledo City, Cebu was killed during an ambush on Sunday afternoon, October 9, 2022.

Victim Antonio Yumol Canonigo was riding his motorcycle driven by his friend and bodyguard Bern Benlot in Barangay Bagakay, when two men riding in tandem shot Canonigo in the back twice around 5:30 p.m.

According to the Toledo City Police Station, witnesses said Benlot was able to fire back with his .45 pistol and shot the gunman in the thigh.

A shootout ensued.

The assailants then fled, while Canonigo was rushed to the Toledo City Medical Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Among the items recovered from the crime scene were 10 empty shells of a .45 pistol.

Police are still trying to determine the motive for the attack.

In September 2017, operatives of the Regional Intelligence Division-Regional Special Operations Group arrested Canonigo in his business establishment in Barangay Cambang-ug, Toledo City for keeping unlicensed firearms. (GPL/PJB)
