Dragon fruit fest brings economic benefits to Guimarasnons

THE recently concluded Guimaras Dragon Fruit Fest: A Fresh experience has brought economic benefits to the Guimarasnons.

The Provincial Economic Development Office report showed positive impacts of the two-day festivities held last September 29-30, 2022 at the Provincial Capitol grounds in San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras.

The trade fair, which was one of the highlight of the festival, has generated a sales of P405,737 of which 42 percent (P170,000) came from sales of fresh dragon fruits.

A total of 946 kilograms of fresh dragon fruits were sold during the two-day affair.

A 29 percent increase in tourist arrivals was also recorded in Jordan Wharf during the conduct of the festival while tourist receipts surged by 29 percent.

Another proof of success of the province's first dragon fruit festival is the recorded 25-40 percent increase in the daily income of tricycle drivers plying the San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras route.

This affirms that influx of people to San Miguel, Jordan where the activities were held.

Small business establishments around the Provincial Capitol area also recorded a 25-75 percent increase in their sales during the Dragon Fruit Fest.

The aim of the Guimaras Dragon Fruit Fest is to contribute to the recovery of the province's economy that is still reeling from the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The festival featured Bike Caravan which was participated by 134 bikers; trade fair; "Dragon Fruit Classrom"; job fair, and business forum.

During the job fair, 27 job applicants were hired on the spot.

By conducting such festival, the Provincial Government of Guimaras and partner organizers aim to increase awareness of the dragon fruit which may increase the income of the local growers.

The festivity is also in line with the celebration of the National Tourism Month. (PR)
