Mama faces Robles in Engkwentro VII main event

JERVEN Mama and unbeaten up-and-comer Berland Robles clash tonight, Oct. 15 in a 10-round main event of Engkwentro VII at the Consolacion Sports Complex in Consolacion.

The 25-year-old Mama is looking to bounce back after suffering his first career defeat last year in the hands of highly world-ranked Mark Vicelles. Mama was knocked out in the waning seconds of the final round on July 3, 2021 in Mandaue City.

Robles, on the other hand, is a 22-year-old prospect that just made his pro debut last year. So far, he’s been very impressive, winning all three of his fights this year. He’s coming off a lopsided unanimous decision win over Ramel Antaran in Sibonga.

Mama is 12-1-1 with seven knockouts, while Robles is 5-0 with two knockouts. BJ Wild takes on his stiffest test to date against veteran former regional champion Carlo Demecillo in the co-headliner.

The 21-year-old Wild is one of the most promising Pinoy prospects and will attempt to move up to the next level with a win over an experienced fighter like Demecillo.

Wild won all three of his fights this year—defeating Marjon Piencenaves, Jason Dogelio and journeyman Mateo Handig.

Demecillo is on a different level with the other fighters that Wild has fought. Demecillo is a former World Boxing Organization (WBO) Youth Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion that has fought the likes of former world title contenders Sho Ishida, Hisashi Amagasa and Arthur Villanueva.

Wild is 9-0 with six knockouts, while Demecillo is 15-6-1 with eight knockouts.

In the undercard, April Jay Abne (10-1, 5 KOs) trades leathers with Antaran (5-18-2); John Vincent Pangga (6-0, 4 KOs) locks horns with experienced Vergilio Silvano (21-9-1, 12 KOs); Rodel Wenceslao (17-19-2, 7 KOs) exchange blows with fellow veteran Edison Berwela (18-45-8, 6 KOs); Ramil Macado (3-0, 2 KOs) squares off with Renoel Pael (23-12-1, 12 KOs); Brix Piala (5-0, 2 KOs) slugs it out with Rhonvex Capuloy (8-2, 5 KOs); Ian Abne (6-0-1, 4 KOs) is up against Charlie Malupangue (9-5-4, 6 KOs) in a rematch; and Yeroge Gura (4-0, 2 KOs) faces off with Anthony Gilbuela (5-1-1, 1 KO).
