FIVE high school students representing Cagayan de Oro City have won awards at the SCIA Young Artists and Authors Showcase 2022, an art contest that encouraged youth worldwide to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork, literature, poetry, photography and music.

The SCIA Young Artists and Authors Showcase 2022, held in March 2022, was participated in by sister cities of Sister Cities International Association's (SCIA's) member cities in the United States.

The submissions were centered around the theme, "Generation Rescue: Sustainable Water for All."

They were judged based on originality, composition and theme interpretation.

A total of 194 high school students from both public and private schools joined the said art contest.

Cagayan de Oro was sponsored by her sister city, Norfolk of Virginia, USA. The city submitted the artworks of 30 finalists representing the six categories of the contest, namely: music, poetry, photography, digital art and classic art.

Cagayan de Oro won five of the six categories, one of which is the entry of Jahn Kharmelo Navales from Philippines Southfield School, "Ever Changing 3," that won the grand prize under the Music Showcase.

The other winners from Cagayan de Oro are Mitzel Claire Chan from Oro Christian Grace School, the second place winner under the Essay (Authors) Showcase; Carl Justin Tocle from Gusa Regional Science High School, third place winner under the Photography Showcase; Zsarlette Alanne Cabana from Xavier University Senior High School, third place winner under the Digital Art Showcase; and Zarlie Leoane Niez from Lumbia National High School, third place winner under the Classic Art Showcase.

The grand prize winner in the music category, Navales, received $1,000. Chan, the second place winner received $250, while the third place winners Tocle, Cabana and Niez were awarded $100 cash prizes each.

The awarding ceremony of the SCIA Young Artists and Authors Showcase 2022 was held online on August 12.

The cash prizes were awarded to the winners last Friday, October 14, in the City Mayor's Office, with the presence of ORO-TIPC head John Asuncion and consultant Eileen San Juan.
