5.5M quake hits Matanao, no recorded damage in Davao City

NO damage was reported in Davao Region following a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Matanao town in Davao del Sur on Wednesday afternoon, October 19, 2022.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted the town at 4:05 p.m.

Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) told SunStar Davao in a text message that no damage was reported as of writing.

However, assessments on the ground were still ongoing as of writing.

The Office of the Civil Defense-Davao Region has also not reported any damage in some parts of the region.

Although in its earlier advisory, aftershocks and damage are highly expected.

The tectonic quake has a depth of 001 kilometers.

Meanwhile, Intensity IV was felt in Davao City and General Santos City.

Phivolcs also recorded the following instrumental intensities: Intensity V - Kidapawan City, Koronadal City, Norala, South Cotabato; Intensity IV - Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Alabel, Sarangani; Tampakan, Tantangan, Tupi, General Santos City, South Cotabato; Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Intensity III - Libona, Bukidnon; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Maasim, Kiamba, Malapatan, Sarangani; Santo Nino, Polomolok, Suralla, T'Boli, South Cotabato; Intensity II - Alamada, Cotabato; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Maitum, Sarangani; Lake Sebu, South Cotabato; and Intensity I - Malaybalay, Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental.

Reported intensity was based on reports of people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Aftershocks are likely but damage is not expected from the earthquake.

Phivolcs also reported a 4.2 magnitude earthquake in Balut Island, Saranggani in Davao Occidental at 1:14 a.m. Wednesday. RGL
