Vicelles, Suganob fight in IBF title eliminator

THE International Boxing Federation (IBF) has ordered Mark Vicelles and Regie Suganob to compete for the mandatory challenger spot for the light flyweight belt in a world title eliminator.

According to Omega Boxing Gym head coach Jinggoy Junco the fight is currently on a purse bid on who’ll promote the fight here in the Philippines.

“We are bidding on who will promote (the fight),” Junco told SunStar Cebu. “But we are in a good position.”

Vicelles is promoted by Cebu-based Omega Sports Promotions, while Suganob is handled by PMI Bohol Boxing.

Vicelles is rated No. 4 by the IBF, while Suganob is ranked sixth. Vicelles was originally offered to face Hector Flores in a title eliminator, but the latter declined after just recently losing to current light flyweight champion Sivenathi Nontshinga for the vacant IBF belt.

Next in line was the fifth-ranked Christian Araneta. However, Vicelles and Araneta are close friends and are stablemates at the Omega Boxing Gym, which earned Suganob the opportunity.

Vicelles is currently one of the most highly rated Pinoys right now. He’s also ranked No. 1 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 2 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 10 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the 27-year-old Vicelles was very busy building his way up the light flyweight ladder. He won all seven of his fights by knockout against the likes of Jerven Mama, the late Toto Landero, Richard Claveras and Jaysever Abcede.

“We’re very excited about this because this is what we’ve been waiting for, to fight for a world championship after this one. There’s nothing special with Suganob and Mark can beat him. Mark is the superior boxer against Suganob,” said Junco.

Like Vicelles, the 25-year-old Suganob also stayed busy despite the pandemic. The former ALA Gym-trained boxer won eight straight fights since the pandemic hit the country. He beat the likes of Jake Amparo, Jerome Baloro, Ricardo Sueno and previously unbeaten Indonesian Andika D’Golden Boy. He also won the IBF Youth belt through the process.

Vicelles is 17-0-1 with 10 knockouts, while Suganob is 12-0 with four knockouts.
