WITH the soon-to-rise poultry dressing plant in Davao de Oro, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the province wants more people to turn to poultry raising, the DTI-Davao de Oro provincial director said.

DTI-Davao de Oro provincial director Atty. Lucky Ballaque said the dressing plant would be a good opportunity for more people to invest in poultry raising since the facility would need a huge supply of chicken.

“Right now, ang mga poultry raiser natin (our poultry raisers) (from Davao de Oro), sa Davao City pa mag pa-dress ng chicken nila so ang layo (travel all the way to Davao City to dress their poultry), that adds cost to their production... With the new dressing plant, this is a very good opportunity for them to go into poultry raising,” Balleque said.

The poultry dressing plant, located at the Municipality of Monkayo in Davao de Oro, would have the capacity to process 3,000 to 6,000 chicken heads per hour and at least 48,000 chickens per day.

DTI-Davao Senior Trade Industry Development Specialist Rochelle Nunez said on October 17 that the dressing plant is a P132 million investment.

“We need to maximize that investment... We need more poultry raisers to satisfy the requirement of the plant,” she said during the One Davao virtual presser.

Based on the data of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) released on August 25, the poultry inventory of Davao de Oro has a total of 1,070,036 birds as of January 1, 2022 from 1,146,757 during the same time last year.

Of this, 95 percent were chickens and five percent were ducks. The data is based on the results from the backyard and commercial poultry surveys.

“The poultry sector declined in the total inventory by 1.82 percent,” PSA said in a statement.

In line with this, the DTI-Davao de Oro officers said the poultry industry would be one of the highlights during the upcoming 2022 Davao de Oro Investment Conference (DDOiCON), along with the coconut industry and the transport and logistics sector.

Highlighting the coconut industry is in line with the implementation of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan. The province also aims to strengthen its transport and logistics industry as according to Nunez, it is one of Davao de Oro’s weak sectors.

The DDOiCON will run from October 25 to 26 at the Montevista Sports Complex with 250 to 300 expected participants.

This year, the conference aims to generate P500 million worth of investment leads. ICM
