DAVAO City councilor Jessica Bonguyan passed a resolution urging the Congress to regulate social media platforms being used for illegal gambling and pornographic materials.

During a radio interview on October 26, Bonguyan said the resolutions will focus on social media platforms posting illegal gambling activities and pornographic materials, and impose appropriate penalties.

She said regulating such content in social media would help protect children and minors from being exposed to inappropriate and illegal content that could corrupt them.

“Naa’y mga nanggawas sa social media, particularly sa Facebook, naa’y access ang atong mga kabatanunan so makita nila ang online gambling, online sabong mao na ginaprotektahan nato atong menorde edad na unta i-regulate na (There are content on social media, particularly Facebook, that our children our exposed to, like online gambling and online sabong so we want to protect them from that since they are only minors),” she said.

Bonguyan added that “A resolution urging our Congress to draft a bill regulating social media platforms who allow posting illegal gambling activities” and “A resolution imploring Congress to draft a bill penalizing social media accounts who post illegal gambling activities, pornographic and obscene content, websites, and materials” were already forwarded to the House of Representatives.

As chairperson of the Committee on Games and Amusements, the councilor is responsible to address matters that could progress and resolve issues involving the amusement and gaming sector in Davao City.

“I hope madunggan atong mulo diri sa lungsod sa Dabaw (I hope our plea would be heard),” Bonguyan said. ICM
