Central, northern Cebu still under signal #1; ‘Paeng’ to make landfall in Batangas

THE state weather bureau lifted Saturday afternoon, October 29, 2022, the storm signal in some areas in Cebu, but stressed that the northern and central portions of the island remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) Number 1.

In its 2 p.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the areas in Cebu that are still under TCWS 1 are Daanbantayan, Medellin, San Remigio, Tabogon, City of Bogo, Borbon, Tabuelan, Sogod, Catmon, Tuburan, Carmen, Danao City, Asturias, Balamban, Compostela, Liloan, Cebu City, Mandaue City, Consolacion, Toledo City, City of Talisay, City of Naga, Pinamungahan, Minglanilla, Aloguinsan, San Fernando, City of Carcar, Barili, Sibonga, Dumanjug, Argao, Alcantara, Moalboal, Ronda, Lapu-Lapu City, Cordova, Badian, Dalaguete, Bantayan and Camotes Islands.

It said Paeng has started to move west northwestward and is about to make landfall in the vicinity of San Juan, Batangas.

As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the eye of Paeng was spotted over the coastal waters of San Juan, Batangas, packing maximum winds of 95 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, gusts of up to 130 km/h, and central pressure of 985 hPa. It was moving west northwestward at 15 km/h.

Metro Manila, Bataan, the southern portion of Zambales (Olongapo City, Subic, Castillejos, San Antonio), Marinduque, the northern and central portions of Quezon (Pitogo, Lucena City, Pagbilao, Infanta, Tiaong, Unisan, Plaridel, San Antonio, Candelaria, Lucban, Sampaloc, Padre Burgos, Sariaya, City of Tayabas, Mauban, Dolores, General Nakar, Agdangan, Gumaca, Atimonan, Real, Macalelon, General Luna, Catanauan) including Pollilo Islands, Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, Rizal, the northwestern portion of Occidental Mindoro (Paluan, Abra de Ilog) including Lubang Islands, and the northern portion of Oriental Mindoro (San Teodoro, Puerto Galera, Baco, City of Calapan, Naujan)

Pagasa said Paeng was forecast to track west northwestward through Sunday, October 30.

Based on the forecast track, the center of the storm will make landfall in the vicinity of San Juan, Batangas before traversing the Cavite-Metro Manila-Bataan Peninsula area for the remainder of the day.

Due to frictional effects, Paeng may weaken into a tropical storm while moving over the Luzon landmass, but it may re-intensify into a severe tropical storm once it reaches the West Philippine Sea, said Pagasa. (LMY)
