SEVERAL Davao City Councilors welcomed the groundbreaking of the Samal Island-Davao City (SIDC) Project, saying it is a win-win situation for both the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos)vand Davao City.

“It is a win-win situation because ang (the) tourism will increase for both parties, and para sa akoa, okay siya and gwapo siya nga project (for me, this project is a good project),” Councilor Bonz Andre Militar said in an ambush interview with SunStar Davao on October 27, 2022.

City Councilor Jessica Bonguyan said she was happy with the groundbreaking as finally it was realized after years and years of being talked about.

“Happy kaayo ko nga murag na-realized na gyud kay naa na gyu’y groundbreaking kay first step na gyud ni para matuloy-tuloy na. Dugay na gyud ginapaabot sa mga Dabawenyo and of course sa mga taga-Samal na mahitabo na gyud (I am so happy that finally the project will be realized since there’s already a groundbreaking ceremony, this is a first step for the project. All Dabawenyos and Samaleños have been waiting for this for a long time),” Bonguyan said.

She said that the SIDC project will shorten the travel time between Davao City and Igacos to five minutes from 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, City Councilor Tek Ocampo said despite the opposition of environmental groups and concerns from some of those in the business sector, he reiterated they are not against the construction of the bridge.

“Naa lang silay tagsa-tagsa ka mga concerns nga ilang gipasibaw, being in the government maminaw ta nila despite naa nay groundbreaking, but then we need to act also sa hangyo sa mga proponents and see what the government can do and kung unsa atong marekomenda (They have raised concerns and being in the government, we have to listen to them despite the groundbreaking already done. But at the same time, we need to act on the concerns of the proponents and see what the government can do and what can we recommend),” Ocampo said.

Ocampo said they have conducted a committee hearing on October 26, 2022, to discuss the SIDC and all proponents have been invited, he said “everybody was given a chance to talk.”

Meanwhile, Councilor Enzo Villafuerte hopes the project will revitalize the economy of both cities.

“We hope that this project will result in a revitalized post-pandemic economy for both Davao City & Igacos. We are thankful to the Marcos Administration for supporting infrastructure projects here in Mindanao. Congratulations to all agencies concerned,” Villafuerte said. KSD
