A NUMBER of local government units (LGU) in Davao Region declared suspension of classes on Thursday, November 3 due to bad weather conditions brought by low-pressure area (LPA) over the region.

The province of Davao de Oro was among the first to declare a province-wide suspension of classes in all levels of both public and private schools.

Davao de Oro governor Dorothy P. Montejo Gonzaga said the suspension was a necessary precaution since the heavy rainfall may cause flooding and landslides in various parts of the province.

In Davao Oriental, the Municipality of Banaybanay also suspended classes in the elementary and secondary levels of all public and private schools.

However, Mati City along with the municipalities of Caraga, Lupon, San Isidro, Governor Generoso, Boston, and Cateel covered suspension in the elementary and secondary levels of public schools only.

Tertiary and private schools in the said areas were encouraged to follow suit but suspension of classes was not mandated.

The suspension in Davao Oriental schools was declared to serve as a precautionary measure amid the bad weather conditions.

Meanwhile in Davao del Sur, the municipalities of Bansalan and Sta. Cruz suspended classes at all levels in both public and private schools.

On the other hand, Davao City suspended classes at all levels but only in Barangays Marilog Proper, Baganihan, and Buda.

The low-pressure area affecting parts of Mindanao was formerly tropical depression “Queenie.”

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), moderate to heavy rains may still persist in the next 24 hours in Davao Region, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Soccskargen, Lanao del Sur, and Maguindanao. ICM
