AT least 150 cyclists in Davao City joined an international movement on Sunday, November 6 to seek reparations for developing countries most affected by climate issues.

The Davao Bike Action Climate is part of the third and final leg of the wider Pedal for People and Planet cycling event wherein participants aim to call out governments from rich countries to immediately deliver climate solutions for developing countries facing the brunt of the climate crisis.

This is according to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which specifies that developed countries and giant corporations from the Global North should be liable or should provide resolutions since they are the biggest contributors to the climate problem.

Some of the developing countries affected are the Philippines, Pakistan, and Bangladesh which experienced calamities that show the gravity and urgency of the climate crisis.

“This climate finance is to be used for adaptation, building resilience, and GHG reduction measures in developing countries, which includes the transition to renewable energy away from fossil fuels. It is not aid or assistance but part of reparations for the harm caused,” said the Sustainable Davao Movement in a statement.

However, Rara Ada from the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice, emphasized that the national and local government in the country should also initiate interventions and actions to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis.

"With the recent incidents caused by Typhoon Paeng, it is important to provide climate finance to cover loss and damage to lives, infrastructure, ecosystems, and economies,” executive director of the Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability Atty. Mark Peñalver said.

The Davao Bike Action Climate is simultaneous to other Pedal for People and Planet event across Asia including Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Nepal. In the Philippines, Davao City is one of the ten cities that participated.

The movement is in line with the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Egypt where world leaders are participating in a climate summit beginning November 6. ICM
