RAPE cases involving acquaintances of victims topped the list of the most rape cases in Davao City, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported.

DCPO spokesperson Major Catherine dela Rey said in an interview with SunStar Davao on November 7, 2022 that from January 1 to October 31, 2022, they have already recorded 123 rape cases. This remains to be lower compared to the 133 cases reported for the whole year of 2021.

Of the total rape cases recorded in the city, 58 of them involved acquaintances who are under the influence of illegal drugs and intoxication. This is higher compared to the 47 recorded for the whole year of 2021.

Second on the list are rape cases involving neighbors with 15 reported incidents in 2022. This is lower than the 20 recorded cases in 2021.

Incest rape was third but DCPO was not able to provide the total number. However, most of the victims of incest rape are female. Victims’ age includes those who are five years old and below and even those in the age group of 36 to 45 years old.

Meanwhile, Dela Rey said most of the victims of the total number of rape cases in the city are minors because they are vulnerable.

“Dali ra man gud sila maimpluwensyahan sa mga offenders (It is easy for the offenders to influence them),” Dela Rey said.

She added that aside from influence and intoxication, most of the suspects are also exposed to pornography.

“Sa assessment sa WCD (Women's and Children Desk), exposure gani sa pornography especially kay accessible na karun anywhere, tungod sa internet, unya halos tanan naa nay mga gadget (Based on the WCD assessment, it is easy for people to be exposed to pornography because of the internet. They can access porn anywhere as long as they have a gadget and an internet connection),” Dela Rey said.

She also said 90 percent of the recorded rape cases happened inside the house of the victim or offender.

She said with the rape cases happening inside the house, it is difficult for them to arrest the offenders.

“Nahitabo man gud sa balay, unya kasagaran is magkaila so kumpyansa ra maong dapat dili sila magkumpyansa biskan pa og imuha pa ng kaila or paryente na kauban diha sa inyuhang balay, labi na kung mag-inom inom na (It happened inside their house because the victim knew or trusted the offender. They should be more vigilant, especially if they are drinking with the offender),” Dela Rey said.

She also said most of the rape cases were reported late. This also made it hard for them to arrest the offenders because most of the offenders have already fled.

To prevent rape, Dela Rey said they have been conducting information and advocacy campaign, especially at schools.

“Para makahibalo pud tong mga biktima nga dili sila manago kay naa silay madoolan, naa silay pwede masumbongan sa ilahang problema, ug naay agency nga pwede motabang sa ilahang problema (This is for the victims to know that they have someone they can approach or report to if they encounter these kinds of problem),” Dela Rey said.

Dela Rey said if they knew someone who is a rape victim, it is very important to report the incident immediately to the police to allow the authorities to act on it.

Meanwhile, Dela Rey said offenders of rape will face charges for violations of the Anti-Rape Law of 1997. KSD
