A TOTAL of 6,759 workers in the Davao Region were terminated as of the third quarter of 2022 as more establishments reduce employees or cease operations, according to the regional Department of Labor and Employment (Dole-Davao).

The latest labor and employment statistics as of September 30 showed that these affected workers came from 389 business establishments in the industries of agriculture, forestry, fishing, administrative and support service activities, and other service activities.

Among the said establishments, 350 reduced or retrenched employees while the remaining 39 establishments closed. 149 establishments were also classified as small enterprises, followed by 120 large business enterprises, 85 micro-enterprises, and 35 medium enterprises.

According to DOLE, the top three reasons for terminating employees are financial losses, closure or cessation of operation of an establishment not due to serious losses of financial reverses, and redundancy.

The number of terminated individuals as of the third quarter of 2022 is already an increase for the first quarter of the year wherein 2,997 workers from 162 establishments were affected. The reasons for termination are financial losses, retrenchment to prevent losses, and sometimes a combination of two or more reasons.

On the other hand, the affected industries remained similar except for administrative and support service activities, which were wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles in the first quarter.

However, the overall unemployed population in Davao Region improved. As of July this year, the unemployed population is at least 68,000 from 103,000 during the same period in 2021.

The same can be said for underemployment, with 174,000 as of July this year from 345,000 in 2021. ICM
