TALISAY City Council plans to impose a ban on plastic to reduce the amount of garbage in the city.

Councilor Lito Bacaltos, environmental solid waste management chairman, said they still have to discuss how many days of the week the ban will be imposed.

“Our plan is to ban plastic either twice or thrice a week,” he said in a mix of English and Cebuano.

For him, the only thing missing to implement a total ban is to reach out to the people so they can be informed and also put some teeth into the law, he said.

“Let’s show an example to the people. Hopefully, the outcome will be good because this is one of the ways to protect nature,” he said in Cebuano.

In the course of his inquiry, Bacaltos said he discovered that every time members of the Aksyon Agad Team respond to blocked drains, plastic is usually the main culprit.

If the City Government cannot find a solution to this problem and if it does not implement a plastic ban, then it will end up spending more, he added.

Meanwhile, City of Talisay-Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Industry president Cyril Velaso and vice president Jacyl Sato said they are in favor of the proposed ban.

Velasco said he supports any proposal that will benefit the majority, adding that the effects of climate change is not only the country’s problem but also of the whole world.

Sato, for her part, said she supports the ban because it will promote sustainable business and address the city’s garbage problem. (BBT / PJB)
